Over the course of a regal event that took place on Tuesday at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Droupadi Murmu presented the national sports awards to the athletes who had performed the best in their respective sports. Cricketer Mohammed Shami was one of the recipients of these accolades.
With the Hangzhou Asian Games taking place from September 23 to October 8 of the previous year, the awards ceremony, which was normally held on August 29 to mark the birth anniversary of hockey great Major Dhyan Chand, was postponed.
Sporting bigwigs who were picked for the Arjuna award this year were wrestler Antim Panghal, a former junior world champion and bronze-winner in the senior event last year, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin (bronze-winner at last year’s world championship), and para archer Sheetal Devi.
