With a 1-0 victory over England, Spain became the first team in history to win the Women’s World Cup.
The Lionesses, the current European champions, were unable to win the World Cup for England for the first time since 1966 thanks to Spain’s victory in only its third World Cup appearance. The English men’s team won the only World Cup ever won by a country.
Olga Carmona scored the game-winning goal for Spain in the 29th minute. As a result, the left back became only the seventh player in World Cup history to score in both the semifinals and the final. He did so for Spain, which has the most goals (18) in the tournament.
The more aggressive team during the entire final, Spain nearly had a revolt last year when 15 players quit the national squad.
Coach Sarina Wiegman, the team’s first non-British manager, experienced her first defeat in the competition with England. She was hired in late 2021. For Wiegman, it was his third straight finals defeat.
Since neither Spain nor England had ever won the Women’s World Cup before, the final game was sure to produce a first-time champion.
